**UPDATES: I found another place where you can get the machine gun. At the very beginning of Level 2: Muddy, a red car is swerving out of control towards you with a zombie on the windshield. Shoot off the zombie in order to save the man inside. If you did this successfully, the red car will skid to halt right in front of you, and beside it will be a parked blue van. Shoot at the van's back doors to make it open. After the man thanks you, the screen will zoom into the van's interior and you can collect the item inside. This gave me the machine gun twice. Good luck!**
The weapons such as shotgun, grenade launcher, machine gun, toy gun, etc. are all found in various locations throughout the game. Make sure that the game is in Original Mode. Once you use them, they disappear, and you can't always find them in the same place.
The machine gun was given to me by the miner (man in the yellow suit?) that I met on my way to the Colosseum (Level 4: Despair) who is being attacked by a skeletal zombie while another zombie with a sword is coming towards you. He gives you various objects, and he only gave me the machine gun once.
Your best bet is to shoot crates, car doors, chemical containers, ceramic jars, boats (the man on the boat being attacked by a zombie on Level 3. Once you save him, fast-forward through Amy's call and check his boat again. If you're lucky, there will either be a shotgun or a grenade launcher there for you) and etc. The good stuff is usually found near survivors, or where humans have recently been (cars, boats, rooms)
Good luck!

No, machine guns were typically carried by a machine gun team. An officer seldom carried a machine gun and normally a pistol and perhaps a carbine. Some may have been able to get a sub-machine gun.
In World War 2 there were three types of machine guns used: squad support weapon, medium machine gun, and Heavy Machine gun such as the Browning M2, and the M1919
Normal Machine Guns are about 2-3 feet long.

The .45 Thompson sub-machine gun and M3 sub machine gun (grease gun) were used in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam War. A sub-machine gun is called a SUB machine gun because it uses "pistol" ammunition. The M3 sub-machinegun looked exactly like a grease gun; hence the name.
