It depends on how old the dog is. If it is young it is very easy to mold it's mind, if it is old, it will be very difficult as it is already set in its ways. A good way to do it is to say their name before the command, and say it firmly. Dont yell at them, or sound angry, but say it like you mean business. If they do it, offer them a treat, or give them a lot of quick, positive attention. Repeat this as often as possible so that they know what to do when you say that specific command. If they don't follow, you can just repeat the command. If they're doing something bad and you catch them in the act, you can take a small spray bottle and give them a little squirt and say bad *name* or bad dog, once again, not angrily, but firmly. They don't like this, so they learn from their actions. Trust me, this is way better than punishing them by putting them in their kennel or box, and hitting is never the answer, that will just make a mean dog.

There is so much to dog psychology and knowing what is and what is not acceptable is extremely important to live harmoniously with your canine friend. When exiting and entering any building with your dog, all humans in the "pack" go first and the dog last. This is telling the dog that he is lowest ranking. Never start a walk while your dog is in a hyper state of mind. If the dog is hyper, just stand there with the leash until he/she calms down. If the dog starts to act up again, do not put the leash on until they are calm. They will learn that they will not go for a walk until they calm down. While walking, do not allow your dog to sniff and potty. Allow them to sniff and potty when YOU want them to, not when THEY want to. A good long walk before leaving your home for an extended time will tire your dog out and lessen the chances of destroying your house. Just remember, it isn't just the walk. You need to be calm-assertive with your dog at all times. If they are doing something wrong, in a calm and assertive tone tell them, "No" or whatever it is you want to say, but NEVER say their name because they will associate it with something negative whenever you do say it. Teach them basic commands such as come, sit, lay down, and stay. Those four commands will help you tremendously in establishing a good relationship with your dog. Only show affection when they are calm, never when they are nervous or alert. A lot of people associate perked ears and wagging tail as a sign of happiness when, in fact, it means that the dog is alert or nervous. If your dog greets you with a low posture, ears down, and wagging tail, it is submissive and accepts you as its leader. If you think this is cruel treatment, then maybe you should think about whether you are ready to own a dog or not. Again, they are ANIMALS and people tend to associate human emotions with them. Dogs do not live in the past or for the future, they are the here and now. This means that what is going on with them this very second is what matters to them. If you find a dog who had a bad life, do not cradle it like a human baby and talk babyish to them. You are only confusing the dog even more so. Dogs need a stable leader. One that they can trust even when times are bad. On the other note: if a dog follows you around the house at a respectable distance it means that they are accepting you as their leader. If they are at your feet, cutting you off, then they are being dominant over you and should be corrected with proper training.

Actually, you just have love them. My dog always follows me were ever i go, and that's because of how much i love him, and he loves me. If it is really bad, then you could carry treats around, giving him some. They will eventually get to follow you.

If your dog is a collie or similar farming dog, then it might naturally herd. But if it isn't and you want to get it to, then you may have a hard time. You can probably but books on teaching dogs to herd, and most farmers have the knowledge passed down from father to son. If you want the basics, I think you should start with teaching it left and right with words such as 'away' and stuff. I don't have any knowledge on the subject to be honest but I have watched a couple of movies which include sheepdogs i.e. Babe the Sheeppig.

Well there are dog whistles that are made to release a pitch at such a high frequency that only dogs can hear it. The best way to get a dog's attention really is to call your dog in a high, happy voice. Yelling at dogs makes them feel they've done wrong and they will feel sad or try to get away from an angry voice. A happy, loud voice is more encouraging.
