At a routine chiropody appointment a chiropodist can remove callus with a scalpel, this is usually a painless experience.

It is also possible for certain products to be used to break down the excess hard skin. In many cases callus can be prevented. Using a good emollient on the foot will help keep your skin supple. Wearing cushioned footwear can also help.

How do you have healthy living skin and dead skin at the same time?

The skin is the largest organ of the body. And it is very much alive at its deepest layers. However, the skin is constantly replenishing itself, with new skin cells constantly forming from the inside layers, out. The outermost layer that we see is a combination of living skin cells, dying skin cells, and dead skin cells. Similar to dandruff on the scalp, the dead skin raises from the intact skin layer, then begins to flake off. Humans lose millions of dead skin cells, most being brushed off our skin as we put on or take off clothing or when we bathe or shower. In person's with very dry skin, the dead skin may be more noticeable. People who do not bathe/shower and who do not vigorously towel dry, dead skin may continue to cling to the new skin, making dark "dirty" patches of dry skin or callouses on the body.

What is the meaning of 'raw skin'?

Usually, raw skin is live tissue. Typically, our skin is dead. The living skin cells are in the lower layers, covered by dead cells which protect our insides. When we get scratched or nicked, we can scratch off these dead cells, exposing the live tissue below. But not deep enough to bleed

Can catfish eat the dead skin off your hands and feet like the doctor fish?

Not sure about catfish. But it has been used in many salons where they are using the doctor fish to eat the dead skin off feet. I'm not sure either, petshops use catfish to clean the pond plants, they suck off the algae dead plant cells-don't know about feet but I'm tempted to try!!!

What layer of the skin contains dead cells?

Dead skin cells are called keratin and are usually packed on the palms of our hands and the soles of our feet. They usually stay there and sometimes flake off. There is keratin on skin in general, and they just fall and is rubbed away. Unless you scrub off the keratin, it remains on the surface of our skin (epidermis).

Is the epidermis dead?

Dead Epidermis refers to dead upper skin layers in humans and animals. The skin has two layers, the Epidermis (which is on the very surface) and the much thicker Dermis, which lies below and forms the main body of skin. Every so often, parts of the epidermis die and flake off, to be replaced by a new one that grows to take it's place. This is to keep the skin clean, and get rid of harmful bacteria that get trapped in the Epidermis.
