The outermost layer that we see is a combination of living skin cells, dying skin cells, and dead skin cells. Similar to dandruff on the scalp, the dead skin raises from the intact skin layer, then begins to flake off. Humans lose millions of dead skin cells, most being brushed off our skin as we put on or take off clothing or when we bathe or shower.
