Place the lumps in a coffee cup and microwave for 2 minutes on High. This removes the water from the sugar. Use caution when removing the cup from the microwave, it will be HOT. Then, crush the lumps with a spoon.

Same way you dissolve sugar in any liquid. Heat it. I would recommend low heat or 15 seconds at medium power in a microwave, stir and check, repeat until dissolved.

What does it mean to soften fat and combine with sugar?

When combined with sugar, the fat referred to is usually butter or margarine. You microwave the butter/margarine for about ten-fifteen seconds, until it is easily malleable and can be stirred into sugar without huge lumps of just butter remaining.

How do you soften hard white sugar?

You can soften sugar that has hardened and won't break apart easily in the microwave. Take the hunk of sugar out of the bag, place on a plate. Microwave for a few seconds, perhaps ten, then check the sugar with a fork or spoon to see if it has softened yet. Never check the sugar with your finger or hand, sugar burns are hot and nasty. Keep repeating the process every ten seconds until the sugar has softened.

What will happen if you leave lumps in your cake batter?

The lumps in your cake batter usually consist of lumps of flour or sugar. These lumps will remain once you bake your cake, and you will still have lumps of flour or sugar in your baked cake. The best thing to do is to use a good mixer (a hand mixer works fine), and make sure all ingredients are properly blended before baking.

How can you soften granulated sugar that has hardened?

Putting chunks of sugar in a food processor works, but it scratched the inside of my processor so I did it the old fashion way. I broke the block into baseball sized chunks with and ice pick and put these inside an old tee shirt. I used the side of a hammer to brake these up. Holding the arms and tail of the tee shirt, I poured the contents through the neck hole into a large pan. There were still pea sized lumps so a held a colander over another pan and sifted out the lumps. (Holding a vibrator against the colander makes this go really fast.) Then I used the back side of an ice-cream scoop to brake up the remaining lumps in the colander.
