You need to remember the password to access the files. If you do not remember the password, you will not get in the files. The procedure to hack into MS Office files is not an appropriate topic for this on-line forum, so I will not post the information here.

Microsoft Word 2007 file.
If the file is a Word 2007 file (which is still .doc) it won't work on earlier versions of Word (97-2003). This might be your problem.
