There are a couple of ways to get rid of cigarette smoke from air vents. You can start by doing what most have suggested and change the cabin filter. Put a few drops of essential oil on the new one before you install. If you really want to get rid of the smell rather than just covering it up, you have to kill the smell in the vents themselves and the cabin filter wont do that. A little trick I like to do is. Get yourself a can of the Lysol Aerosol spray. Start your car and roll down all the windows in the car. Turn your air conditioner on it highest setting. Open your hood, yes while the car is still running. Under the hood, up near the windsheild you should see an intake vent. It will be grated plastic. That is the intake for the outside air going into your car. Take that can of lysol and spray it into that vent. Spray about 1/4 of the can into that vent under the hood. Then you can turn you car off and let it sit for an hour or so with the windows down to air out what will be a really strong lysol smell in the car. The lysol not only makes the car smell good but it kills bacteria in the vents causing bad smells.

Definitelly replace the cabin air filter and spray duct clearner with the fan on through the cabin filter housing. you can also buy cabin filters with febreeze in them, i have tried one and i loved it.
