You can't. The lock ring HAS to be removed. Short of replacing the entire gas tank you will have to get whatever tool is made for the job (yes there is a special tool for it). You might also want to check to see if the lock ring is available by itself without buying the whole tank, before you damage the ring trying to remove it. That way, you know how much care you need to take removing it. If it's available separately, you might be able to break the ring to remove it, then get a replacement ring. But that lock ring has got to come off. And please, please, please don't use anything around that gas tank that can potentially throw a spark, like a grinding wheel, or even a chisel. ==New== In my case the lock ring was impossible to remove because it was thickly painted over with some type of black coating (paint??). After I carefully(scraping with brass to avoid generating a spark)removed this coating the lock ring easily moved by tapping on the tabs.

Should be like the 95. The shifter need only be moved into the correct position to go into 4 wheel. The pickup should have locking hubs so you dont need to get out. If not then move to each front wheel and turn the dial until it points to locked. Then shift the lever in the pickup to 4 wheel high or low. Also look on the passenger visor. It usually has the directions also.
