There is a switch that is located 3/4 the way up the brakepetal shaft by the brakelght switch. It is activated when you press the brake petal. This is the shiftlock switch. It unlockes the shifter button. These sometimes go bad. Also if this is not the problem, take a Allen wrench (metric) and unscrew the small screw recessed on the lower front of the shift knob.Take the shift knob off the shifter shaft, and grease the point where the thumb buttons inside slides on the long plastic rod that goes down inside the shifter shaft.
ALSO...
There is also a locking solenoid inside the console itself which is (de)activated by the aforementioned brake switch on the brake pedal.
Remove the console top by opening the armrest and removing the two bolts at the leading edge. Then pry the console top plate up and off.
The locking solenoid is a black cylinder under the shift indicator. You can pry it off the metal rods with a screwdriver.
Test it by leaving it plugged in elecrically and holding it in your hand. Turn on the key without starting the motor, and press the brake pedal.
With the brake pedal held down, the moving shaft on the solenoid should be able to be extended and pushed back in fully.
Release the brake pedal, and the shaft should not be able to be extended - only returned in and locked in.
If the shaft still goes both in and out with the brake off, you either have a bad brake switch or a bad solenoid.
If your brake lights are coming on, you have a bad shift-lock solenoid, but if the brake lights aren't coming on then you obviously have a bad brake light switch.
i have a 1998 honda accord the gear shift is locked...
I had a problem before with my 1998 firebird where the radio locked and I had to get a code to unlock it now it is locked again and I don't have the manual to get the instructions to unlock it but I do still have the code.
ur in a lot of trouble
The only way I know is to take it to the dealership. Some are suppose to charge $40 for this.
If you go to a web site at www.radio-code.com you will find the info there. they will guide you thruogh the steps to get your radio seriel # first then then you e-mail them the # &19.95 they will send you the override code for your radio i had to do this and it worked. Bought 2nd hand car, did not know but it works good luck !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKdDTupYOCM Its for a 1998 Buick Century, but I believe it is the same on the Intrigue
The cast of Locked-in Syndrome - 1998 includes: Alain Ganas
yes They are all the same on the body parts
What does 'service engine soon' light mean on a 1998 olds intrigue?
Check the stop lights - shift interlock is usually the same circuit - check fuse Move the ignition switch to 1st position (unlock) with engine off - then shift to neutral to start vehicle and then you will be able to shift to "D or R"
Change what?Change what?
In the oil pan.
