When you unscrew it pull it towards the driver side wheel and turn it around that way the rounded part of the filter can slide by that bar its kind of a tough fit but you can get it through there. its a pain in the butt, but once ya do it afew times ya get use to it.
-HA! I went through this today. It's like playing with a rubic's cube...you just have to twist and turn until it finally drops down!
On my 93 there's a small wire harness that runs through that general area, move it and the filter fits through there.

Just adding to the first answer, which is just fine. I use the shortest oil filter I can find in my case it's a Fram HM-2 it's a little pricy but what the heck. This will make changing / removing the oil filter a little easier. I didn't say easy, I said easier. If ya don't like the price of the HM-2 just go to your local parts store pull all the brand name oil filters off the shelf that fit the 4.6L and buy the shortest one. You'll be surprised at the length difference you'll find. Drl
Purolator & Motorcraft have a new small dia. filter for late model Fords with metric filters. They ar a little shorter as well. Much better that the Fram products. Advance as there own pro brand made by Purolator that's only about $1.60 but U have to ask for it.
I was looking at one of the Ford websites and it shows : For each of the model years of the Lincoln Mark VIII ( 1993 to 1998 ) The Motorcraft ( FL-820-S ) engine oil filter is used

no, i believe the 1992 crown vic uses a AODE transmission, while the Lincoln mark viii uses a 4r70w.
There is no LincolnMark XIII (13). There is however a Lincoln Mark VIII which is a Lincoln Mark 8. If this is what is meant that model car first debuted in 1993.
