It really seems impossible, but it is true. We think of white as being 'no color', but it is more like color 'static', a lot like the sound we call 'static'. It is a jumble of all the colors of light (not pigment!) together. You might 'wow' students or teachers if you point out that this is an effect of light. If you try this by mixing pigments (paints or other kinds of pigment) you won't get what you want. Try, and you will see.

If you can put together some equipment you can demonstrate the idea. Several lights, one each of various colors, should be rigged so they shine a beam of light onto a surface. When the lights are all aimed at the same spot on a white screen or wall, the color of the combined beam will be white, or close to white. There will be variability because the lights may be of differing intensity, or they may not be the exact shades needed. The primary colors, red, yellow, and blue will do.

You can do something less involved. Get pieces of brightly colored construction paper. Red, yellow, and blue will do. You may need help from an older relative or parent; a turntable will come in handy. Don't know what a turntable is? That's why you need an older person. Cut the papers so they can be arranged like a circular pie-chart, each color representing about a third of the circle. If your circle can be attached to a turntable, it's possible the turntable will go fast enough for you to see the over-all color of the circle to become white or off-white.

A very old 78 rpm turntable may work best. Or, your older friend may be able to rig the circle to a drill, or help you figure out another way to spin the circle. Maybe easiest of all would be to just figure out how to spin the wheel on a tack or nail, something like the spinning wheel of "Wheel of Fortune", or a roulette wheel.

A very difficult and costly method would be to direct sunlight through a high quality prism, and then engineer a way to take the 'rainbow' of light from the prism and re-direct it to shine together on a surface.

How did colors get their names?

In the early 1800's, an English man by the name of Sir Roseart Crayola looked at a rainbow and started to think. He noticed that little kids that wanted to show their parents a specific color would just point and say that one. In order to help the little Brits he decided to name the colors. He decided the first letter of every color by using the name of his best friend, Roy G. Biv: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, and Violet. He picked this name because there are seven colors in the rainbow and there are seven lettters in his friends name.RedOrangeYellowGreenBlueIndigoVioletThat is how colors were born
