You help a dog the same way you would help yourself. You put the dog on the thyroid medication that the vet prescribes for it. You do regual blood tests to make sure that the dosage is correct; and then the dog lives a happy semi-normal life because it has to have a pill once or twice EVERY day for the rest of it's life. It's not a very serious condition, but you have to make sure you follow the dosing to the T, and make sure it gets its meds when it needs its meds and on time. There are certain conditions that come along with a thyroid problem like fungal infections can happen on the feet, in the ears, on it's skin etc.
