Hi. This is a good question. First, give the child a hug and try to comfort them that way. If this doesn't work, give them a toy or offer them something they like, for example a popsicle or a trip to a nearby playground. If that still doesn't work, take them into the yard and dance around with them and laugh and play, so that they will catch on and start giggling too.
cry with them if you want to help them face the tragedy (if it is one)... if they want to talk about it, JUST LISTEN. if they pause for awhile and look at you as if to say, what do you think..be simpathetic. give a little bit of advice but try to be on their side as much as possible! they need support. if someone hurt them, offer to talk to them about it.
I usually try hugging them. A good, long embrace always makes me feel better. If it's a significant other, do the same thing except for try hushing them gently or stroking their back or their hair.
It depends on why the child is upset, also it depends if they are just upset or having a meltdown.
In general you would comfort an Autistic child just like a neurotypical child but being mindful of any issues they have with sensory issues - e.g. if the child dislikes touch then don't hug them when they're upset unless they initiate. During a meltdown it's important to remove all stimulation, ideally sitting in a quiet room, and as much you may want to comfort the child be aware that touching and talking is stimulation so will potentially make the meltdown worse. Tell the child that it's okay, explain you're going to let them calm down and they can talk to you about it later if you want.
If the child has something they enjoy playing with or has a stim that calms them then use that - f the child likes playing on an ipad for example, allowing them to focus on that can help them earn back 'spoons' and calm down, stimming like rocking or playing with stimming toys can help them distract themselves from other stimulation that may further upset them.
