The number 1 tower on the distributor is the second tower clockwise of the center line of the engine, as viewed from the front and starting the count from the radiator. This applies to the 400cid and the 440cid engines.
The engine number is on the engine block below the distributor.

The eight-valve engine distributor rotor turns clockwise with a firing order of 1-3-4-2. The sixteen-valve engine has the same firing order but the rotor turns counterclockwise. The number one distributor terminal is not the same for both engines. Make sure to trace the number one spark plug wire back to the distributor for verification.
On the 5.0 liter and 5.8 liter V8 engines , # 1 on the distributor cap faces to the REAR and slightly towards the drivers side On the 4.9 liter straight 6 cylinder , # 1 on the distributor cap faces AWAY from the engine
1-3-4-2 Distributor rotates clockwise. Cylinders are numbered as such. Standing in front of the vehicle looking at the engine they are from left to right 4-3-2-1. Number 4 being closest to the distributor.
The crankshaft turns twice for every rotation of the distributor. Turn the engine 360 degrees (once around) and it should bring up #1TDC.

The distributor cap should have the number 1 marked on it. The distributor cap is installed with the # 1 position facing the engine , slightly towards the drivers side of the engine
The number 1 cylinder is located at the front left of the engine block while FACING the engine. Follow the spark plug wire to the distributor a POW there it is.
Engine number is underneath the distributor on front housing on the rough casting. If that fails check underneath the alternator on front housing.
