If it still has a coil and points type ignition you need to make a jumper to run from the Battery + to the + side of the coil. This will give you ignition power. Then you can jump across the starter battery post of the solenoid to the small terminal post closet to the engine to get it to crank over. This will allow it to start and run until the jumper wire is removed. Normally the power wire has a resistor built into it to reduce the voltage on point type ignitions. But it will work for short periods of time.
