Drain about 1 gallon of coolant from radiator Remove housing at the engine end of the upper radiator hose Make note how thermostat is installed in housing Clean both surfaces well Install new thermostat and gasket Re-fill coolant slowly to prevent an "airlock" Start engine and look for leaks Run engine up to normal operating temperature with heater on Re-check coolant level

To replace the thermostat on a 91 Cavalier you need to drain the radiator. Remove the top radiator hose and water inlet. Remove the thermostat from under the inlet. Install the new thermostat and reinstall the inlet and hose. Fill the radiator with fresh antifreeze.

Do not install the shims. Your starter should work fine.
Did you bleed all air from the system? Did you check the operation of the water pump? Did you flush the system thoroughly? Did you accidentally install the thermostat upside down?

FIRST make sure engine is cold. Then remover upper radiator hose from thermostat housing. Now remove the 2 bolts that hold the housing to the engine then remiove thermostat and clean gasket off of housing and engine, Install new thermostat with spring down and gasket then tighten the 2 bolts evenly together until tight. Install hose and fill with coolant. FIRST DRAIN COOLANT
If it has a 4.3L engine the temp sensor is located next to the thermostat housing.
