It depends on the type of modem. Serial modems must be connected to a PC serial port and configured manualy. Serial modems are rarely ever used now. PCI modems must be installed into a spare PCI slot on the inside of the PC, the modem should auto configure. USB modems should be plugged into a USB port and like PCI modems should auto configure.

∙ 15y agoOn the bottom of a Dell unscrew the small window on the bottom, you will see a small card usually says make in China. Go on the internet put in the part number, I bought a new one for $5.99 including shipping. Modem have a small plug in on one end and lifts out of a socket in a board. Easy to do. I had to replace mine after a lightening storm.

An internal modem would be installed using the standard procedures for installing a peripheral/expansion card in a desktop pc.
An external modem would be installed by connecting it to an external port like either a serial port (com1 or com2) or via a USB port. If the connection is via USB you usually need to install the software before you plug in the modem.
Usually the "quick install guide" that is associated with the product is a sufficient guide to getting it installed.
If you have a used product and need the guide you can usually use the Google or Yahoo search box to locate the documentation and download a copy.

During the installation, it automatically installs it.
You do not have to use a modem. Ubuntu has a built-in internet connection system (Auto eth0).
If any of the things mentioned above did not work, you should try to install synaptic.
You should connect and Install your modem hardware on your Windows / Mac before installing Ubuntu.
In that way, you can be sure that it will work.
If the modem does not work after the installation, you must setup the modem on Ubuntu manually
