Anytime this is done, it is also suggested to replace the fuel filter along the frame rail below the passenger rear door. Try to ensure you have the least amount of gas in the tank by either siphoning or just using it until you know it is very low. Using a floor jack of some kind place it gently against the bottom of the tank, usually helps to have something softer in between like a 2x4 so its not metal on metal. Loosen the 2 nuts on the top side of the bolts by reaching up behind the rear bumper and loosen and drop the straps. Unhook the fuel intake pipe and the vapor expansion pipe right next to it. Slowly drop the tank until you can reach each of the connectors on top. 2 use simple clamps, 2 require wrenches. Once these are disconnected, drop the tank to the ground or if vehicle is raised, drop it far enough to access the assembly itself. There is one ring welded to the tank itself, a middle ring that you need to twist 180 and then the assembly should pull straight out about halfway until you get to the rod connected to the float. Takes some twisting but is fairly easy to get out.Once out, pull the old strainer off the bottom, remove the clamps on the rubber hose, tilt the old pump out. Replace the pump, strainer and new rubber hose/clamps if needed. I was told to soak the strainer in clean gas for 24 hours before installing it.Installation is pretty much the reversal.
This was done on a 91 3/4 ton but most of the steps should be the same for many intank pump replacements.
One major thing to watch for is the 3 wire connector that connects to the bottom of the upper assembly. These are known to have too large a space with time and need replacement around 150,000 - 200,000 miles (less on a truck that has had plenty of heavy off road experiences). If the truck still will not start, try replacing that wiring assembly.
