Answer Some dogs are worse than gophers, they really like to dig especially the younger dogs, so you might try chaining him so he or she can't get close to the fence and I say chain as he could chew a rope. Other than that there's not much you can do except wait till he ages a bit and gets out of that digging part of his or her life.

Dogs dig for many reasons: boredom, nails are too long, too hot, escape behavior (where they either want to go from something or to something), anxiety (where they can also dig inside), trying to find critters in the dirt, it's in their blood (like a Jack Russell) or it's just fun to do to pass the time. So the first step is to try and figure out why the dog is digging, then how to prevent it & train an alternative solution. Digging is so easy to become self reinforcing. Meaning, it makes no difference how mad you get, it's already fun to do. The punishment for digging is worth the risk in the dog's point of view. Punishment also usually only means not to dig in your presence, but while the owner's away the dog will play. It's the equivalent of speeding until you see the radar trap. Don't bother burying chicken wire or feces in the holes. Dogs will either cut open their paws, play with their poop, or learn to constantly change up where they dig in the yard. So, what do you do? Supervise your dog when s/he's outside. Offer toys to play with outside to reduce boredom. Create a doggie digging place (like a kiddie pool) and bury treasures, treats, and toys they dog can dig up in the doggie digging place. Exercise both physically & mentally. Dogs are smart. When something more worth their time comes along, it'll "trump" digging.

Here are a couple of things that we have tried, because we had a "digger" too.

1. Put down logs, along the bottom of the fence.

2. Try putting down Fencing(like rabbit fence) along the bottom of the fence.

3. the last idea and a permanent one - pour concrete along the bottom of the fence- this also keeps their toes trimmed !

You want to teach your canine that there will be a consequence, and find something your dog doesn't like and try to relate it to it digging.
