If a wound from a cat has broken the skin, it is advisable to see a medical professional. Claws and teeth carry a large number of bacterial agents, including Bartonella (the cause of 'cat scratch fever'), which can cause potentially serious infections.

When injured, clean your wounds thoroughly with antiseptic immediately, and if possible place a dressing with antiseptic. If a superficial wound this may be sufficient; however if it does not dry up and start to heal in 24 hours, or if a large 'lump' persists under the area; you need to get antibiotics from a doctor. If you notice an enlarged lymph node near where the wound is (this will be a lump generally in the armpits, groin or neck), or start to feel tired or feverish, it is very important to visit your doctor immediately.

As you probably know, colonization and infection are 2 separate events.Colonization occurs when a pathogen enters a wound then replicates.Once you have colonization/replication of a pathogen in a wound, the wound will (most likely) become infected.

Assuming a standard rifle round caused the wound and was fired from a typical ranges, also assuming that the wounded man had no other injuries and was already in fair health, received adequate medical treatment, and that the wound did not become infected, (sorry I know that's a lot of things) the wound say from a month to two months, if the wound became infected it could prove fatal or take years to recover from.

What do you do if you don't know what bite your dog?

Make sure your dog is up to date on his Rabies & DHLP/Parvo vaccinations. Take your dog in to be checked out by your Veterinarian and see what he or she has to say about the bite wound plus the Vet can treat the wound at that time. Bite wounds have a tendency to become very septic and infected so best to have a Veterinarian check out the bite wound.

Can house flies hurt you?

House flies = no. They have a proboscis designed to sop up nutrients. Barn flies = yes. They have a proboscis designed to puncture and suck. Barn flies look identical to house flies unless you know how to tell the difference. So, many people think house flies bite.

How do you know when dog bite becomes infected?

If you are bitten by a dog, immediately cleanse the wound very well. Dogs mouths contain quite a bit of bacteria that can be potentially harmful. Apply antibacterial ointment. If the wound becomes (more) swollen, has purulent discharge (pus), is more painful, or has any red streaks extending from it, pr if you have a fever, see a healthcare provider. Dog bites can be swollen, simply from the pressure from the mouth. They are likely to become infected if not treated appropriately. Also, if you do not know the animal and its vaccine status, immediately see a doctor, as some diseases are transmissable to people.
