The high and low pressure service fittings are different between r-12 and r-134a systems. To attach service equipment to a r-12 system the equipment would be threaded on to the service ports. The r-134a service ports have a snap on quick disconnect fitting.
If you mix r12 with r134 air conditioning system, it will cause a high pressure in your airconditioning system and eventually damage the compressor and the evaporator. R12 is only for r12 aircon and something with r134, it can't be mix.
An R12 system must be retrofitted to be made compatible with R-134a.
It came from the factory with R12. Unless it has already been converted which you will know by a sticker placed somewhere on the system, I would most definitely have it repaired and then converter over to R134. R12 is just too expensive to consider using.

If if it a 1995 or older then it came with R12 installed. 1996 can be R12 or R134. 1997 up, it has R134/R134a. If you suspect it had R12 look for a label somewhere on the A/C unit signifying it has been converted. If you find it has R12 and is leaking and needs repairing, after the leak is repaired, convert it to R134a. R12 is far too expensive to use.
You have to have a permit to buy R12 and it is very expensive. Any system that uses R12 can use 134 the replacement for R12. You will need adapters that screw onto the old fittings that accept the hose that hooks to the 134 can. You add freon to the low side of the system. The adapter are different sizes so you cannot put it in the high pressure side. Yes, if you have any mechanical knowledge at all, you should be able to charge the system without much trouble. OR you can buy all the R12 you like for cheap from Mexican sources and keep the longevity of your original equipment and lower operating pressures of R12. They way your system was designed. R12 comes in everyday by the truckload thanks to our new open border laws.

Kits are available at most auto parts stores. Unless you have the proper tools and skills, I recommend you have this done by a professional. It is illegal to release R12 into the atmosphere. Any R12 left in your system, can be reclaimed. Make sure you receive reimbursement for the R12 they remove. R12 is extremely expensive and valuable. Don't give it away.

More than likely R12 but the 1994 Honda Accord can have either R12 or R134. Look on the A/C condenser or evaporator for a label listed the refrigerant.
