very simple. if your starter is bad your car battery should be fine.. so turn on the headlights and the car radio and open the windows. do the lights work? does the radio play? do the power windows work? if yes then the battery sounds pretty good! if your battery is low on amperage it will not be able to start your car but may work on some eleectronics. if the car will not start but seems to have a charge in the battery. you may want to get a bar or a long metal pipe and hit the starter a bit, this may move the starter enough to get it spinning again (happens alot with cadillacs)
I need to know how to change a starter on a 93 Chevy z71 Unhook battery cables from battery, take the ground wire off starter, take power wire off starter, take the 2 bolts out of starter and should come right out
try changing the battery, your battery might be bad you never know, it might not hold a charge The starter relay needs to have good contact. Even though it may click, the contact is dirty and not good enough to transmit strong electrical power to the starter. Change the starter relay which is connected to the positive cable to the battery. Do not confuse the starter solenoid with the starter relay.
Have the battery and/or starter tested for free at your local auto parts store.
you have to remove the intake manifold , the starter is under the intake ,but first disconnect the negative battery cable. that's all i know on this subject.
It can be a bad starter, but it can be a corroded battery cable. If you know the battery and cables are good, remove the starter and have it tested at most auto parts stores. It can be a bad starter, but it can be a corroded battery cable. You start by disconecting the negative - battery terminal. climb undre the car and dixconect the 2 whires going to the starter. Then unbolt the starter from the transmission. replace is the same way, just oppisite. If you don't even know where the starter is than, follow the positive battery cable till it stops. that is the starter.
If you know the battery and connections at the battery are good then it is more than likely a defective starter.
I don't know what model or engine you have but if you follow the positive battery cable from the battery, it will lead you right to the starter.
Same way you change a battery in 90% of all cars. Open the hood, undo the battery cables and just take the battery out, put new battery in and re-attach cables. Super easy to do, any male that has a car should know how to do this so just ask any guy you know to help you. ( I can tell from this question that your a female)
it may be the starter going out doing it . it will kill the alternator if it keeps going . I know i had it happen to my 96 olds replaced the alt still didnt start and the starter fixed it
1st buy a new starter set the emergency brake and block the wheels raise the hood and disconnect the negetive battery cable and tie it away from the battery under the truck diconnect the cables from the starter making sure you know were they went( zip tie or color code) then simply unbolt remove and install your new starter, installation opposite of removal
bypass it by connecting the battery cable directly to the starter motor. remember the solenoid is just a low voltage switch which exists so that high current cables do not have to be run to the starter system. wheni you turn the ignition key it should activate an electro-magnet in the solenoid which causes a metal bar to connect the battery power to the starter motor. so just bypass it to prove whether it works or not.
