You should get your cat checked at the vet. They will run a blood test. Most of the time, you won't know because your cat will show no symptoms. I have had two cats with feline leukemia, and when they did get sick you could see any or all of the following things: excessive thirst, excessive urination, lethargy, lack of grooming, excessive drooling, anti-social demeanor, extremely white skin (caused by anemia). Any or all of these things can happen, but it really is best to get them tested. Feline leukemia is like HIV/AIDS in humans and it's not the disease, per say, that kills them, it's the secondary infections their bodies cannot fight off. Make sure to get them tested at least twice! Both of my kittens tested negative when I first got them. The vet suggested we not spend the money on the vaccine because they were going to be indoor pets, so we didn't. Three months later one of them became sickly ill, we brought him into the vet and he was retested. He tested positive and died less than two weeks later. Our other cat has tested positive also but he has stuck with us for a little under a year and half now. So you never know, but it's always better to test so you can take preventive care in making sure they don't get worse. Hope this helps!

Cats with feline leukemia?

Yes, there is such a disease, and it's deadly. What do you want to know? All cats should be vaccinated for it, and any cat who roams outside is quite at risk. When I get a new cat I have it tested for Feline Leukemia before I even bring it home because it can easily spread and I have a cat that cannot be vaccinated due to a bad reaction. Take this disease very seriously.

Does the Bengal cat breed have a natural immunity against the feline leukemia virus?

No. No cat breed has a natural immunity against FLV (Feline Leukemia Virus), which is the reason why vaccinating kittens, no matter what the breed, against this and other diseases is so important.

Can cats live with feline leukemia?

How can you tell if a cat has feline leukemia?

The only way to know for sure is to have your veterinarian run a blood test on your cat to look for the virus; this is an easy test that any veterinarian can run and it takes about 10 minutes to get the results back. However, suspicious symptoms of feline leukemia include recurrent infections like upper respiratory infections that take a long time (more than a week) to resolve, decreased energy and appetite and poor body condition (rough fur, losing weight). The bad part about feline leukemia is the infection itself doesn't manifest in diseases except for some fever at the initial infection. Because of this, you often won't know your cat has feline leukemia until either a routine blood test comes back positive or your cat is very sick. The disease itself is progressive and causes the cat's immune system to slowly stop working; cats with feline leukemia often die of other infections like pneumonia or feline infectious peritonitis. Having said this, feline leukemia is not an immediate death sentence - a 100% indoor cat that doesn't interact with other cats can live a pretty normal life with feline leukemia because you have kept the other infections and pathogens away from him. So long as your cat doesn't get infected with other diseases, the fact that his immune system has all the strength of wet tissue paper won't matter.

What are common cat disases that a cat can get?

Some well-known diseases in cats are Feline enteritis (Panleucopaenia), Cat flu, Feline leukemia virus and Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Domestic cats should be vaccinated against the first three. The risk of FIV infection can be reduced by neutering, as this reduces fighting behaviours- FIV is transmitted by bodily fluids such as blood and saliva, mainly through bites.

Can a cat catch nasal lymphoma from another cat?

Feline leukemia is a very contagious viral disease of cats. It is not related to the leukemia that people get, which is a type of cancer. Instead, it is an immune disease similar to human AIDS. The cats pass it to each other by body fluid, so if they eat and drink from the same container, they can catch the disease. Feline leukemia is fatal, and has no cure.
