loosen the fuel line and if fuel squirts forcefully out the pump should be good, but it's really hard to tell pressure wise if you have fuel injectors they need a specific pressure to run.
If you turn on the ignition key without starting the engine you should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds. If you do not check the fuel pump fuse and replace the relay before proceeding. If the fuse is good and the relay is good then you know the pump is more than likely defective.
well you should be able to hear the fuel pump humming or buzzing from the filler tube on the tank while the ignition is on run then if not check the fuse and relay for the fuel pump if there good then you know its the pump
If you know positively the fuel pump is good then either the fuel pump fuse is blown or the fuel pump relay is defective. Inspect the fuse and replace the relay. Also be sure and replace the fuel filter as it may be partially clogged. A partially clogged filter will ruin a fuel pump.
First, how do you know that the fuel pump is "good"? The assumptions that we make are often responsible for making automotive diagnostics difficult. If you haven't used a fuel pressure gauge at the test port there is no possible way to know that the fuel pump is good.
Open the fuel filler door, and remove the fuel cap, and have someone turn the ignition switch on without starting the engine, while you listen at the fuel filler opening. If you hear the pump run then you at least know the fuel pump fuse and fuel pump relay are good. But that does not necessarily mean the fuel pump is pumping fuel it might just be running. The only way to verify if it is putting out the proper pressure is with a fuel pump pressure test. If you do not hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds and then shut down, check the fuse and the rely for the fuel pump. If the fuse and relay are good you know the pump is defective and needs replacing. Be sure and replace the fuel filter.
Swap it with a known good one.
When the vehicle will not start, you cannot hear the pump run and you know the fuse and relay are good, or when you have low fuel pressure, even though the pump is running, and you know the filer is not clogged.
If you turn on the ignition key without starting the engine you should hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds. If you do not check the fuel pump fuse and replace the relay before proceeding. If the fuse is good and the relay is good then you know the pump is more than likely defective.
Electrical Short. Pinch wire. Grounded Wire. exc.
A fuel pump pressure test could determine the condition of the fuel pump and fuel system.
injector is bad
Open the fuel filler door and remove the gas cap. Listen at the fuel filler opening while a helper turns the ignition on but does not start the engine. The pump will run for a few seconds and then shut off. If you do not hear the pump check the fuel pump fuse and the fuel pump relay. If they are good then the pump is more than likely defective. If you hear the pump then you know it is running but that does not mean it is pumping fuel. A fuel pressure test will verify the condition of the pump. Be sure and replace the fuel filter.
