We don't. The Bible says nothing about what kind of fruit it was. The story of it being an apple is a myth. Furthermore, the Bible says the Lord placed an angel to guard the tree of life, so no one could eat from it. That would mean if that were also an apple tree, there would be angels guarding all the apple trees on earth so no one could eat from them! And imagine the price of apple juice, were that the case.

The origin of the apple is that the Greek goddess Hera had an orchard of apples, and was considered the earth mother. There may be some remnant of fact in this myth: the documents and evidences no longer exist.

A:Children in Sunday School and scripture lessons are usually told it was an apple, probably because this is easier to explain than the actual text of Genesis. Genesis 2:9 tells us that God planted the Tree of Life and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. Because Adam and Eve did not realise that they would die one day, God assumed they would not choose to eat of the Tree of Life, but he told adam not to eat the fruit of the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil. It was this last fruit that Adam and Eve did eat. Now they were like gods (Genesis 3:22: "And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us..."), but had also become aware of their mortality.

The only difference between them and God (or the gods) was that they must die. By eating of the Tree of Life, they would then also be immortal. In Genesis 3:24, God drove out the man and placed at the entrance to the Garden of Eden, cherubim and a flaming sword to keep [block] the way of the Tree of Life. In the Genesis story, Adam and Eve were sent from the Garden and could not be allowed back for fear they would eat of the second tree. But the fruit they ate was not called an apple.

A:It is not known what fruit it was.

Eve (it was a papaya)Additional information:Actually, the Bible doesn't say what kind of fruit it was...just 'fruit'(Genesis 3:2+6). Eve first ate the fruit, then gave some to her husband, Adam, who also ate. (Genesis 3:6+12)

What variety of apple did Adam and Eve eat?

A:The story of Adam and Eve gets simplified for young children, including the fruit they ate being described as an apple. However, the tree we find in the Bible is not an apple tree, it is the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil, a common motif in ancient Near Eastern religions. When Adam and Eve ate the fruit, they became like gods (Genesis 3:22-23): "And the Lord God said, Behold the man has become as one of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand and take also of the Tree of Life, and live forever: therefore the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden." This is not what happens when you eat an apple!
