The best way to tell if a turtle is male or female, will be by looking at its eyes or belly. Most male turtles will have red eyes, whereas the females will have brown eyes.

Another way to tell is by looking at a turtle's belly holding it up so that you can see the belly from a side view. Males will have either a flat or concave stomach, meaning that it may dip slightly in. Females will have a stomach that may look slightly flat, but it will be convex, meaning that it will be rounded, so that the females will have room to store there eggs. I hope this helped!

Look under it. It's almost impossible to tell the difference between baby turtles. It has to be an adult then it is possible to recognize the gender of your turtle. One of the few clues can be size. However, the size of turtle can only help you, if you have more turtles. Then you can compare them. You need to look for information about certain species. It's really important, because size difference differs from species to species. Females of the most species are usually bigger than males. This difference can be very small, but it can be up to tens of centimeters. However, do not be fooled by slight differences. There are slight differences between females too. It's the same with males. It's always best to look at more factors which can tell you the difference between females and males. This will decrease the chance of a mistake. Males of some species have different claws than females. They are usually longer. I'm talking about front claws. Ones on the back side are usually the same for both genders. Another thing that can help you determine whether your turtle is a male or female is shape of its "carapace" (the ribcage underneath). There can be more ways to tell female turtle from male. It depends on the species you have. (see related link for details)

Male turtles- Have long claws and tails, narrow shells, brightly colored eyes (male box turtles eyes are red), concave plastrons, and the cloaca is far down the tail.

Female turtles- Have short claws, short, fat, tails, wide shells, flat or convex plastrons, and the cloaca is tucked up under the shell at the top of the tail.
