The car will crank, but not run. Usually a mild screech/ low rpm is a key sound before the belt goes out. If the belt is still attached but jumped a mark, the car will usually have a high rpm. Just shut the car off right away, could be an interference engine. If you have a 3.5l non-interference engine's:
1 take off cover
2 try turning engine by hand or check if belt is broke
From my experience on Dodge this worked best for me.
Timing belt.
has a timing chain
The 3.5 litre V6 engine in a 2004 Dodge Intrepid has a timing BELT
Belt.
In a 2004 Dodge Intrepid : The 2.7 litre V6 engine has a timing CHAIN ( also , the 3.5 litre V6 engine has a timing BELT )

2.7L - chain 3.2L and 3.5L - belt
It must have a TIMING CHAIN because Gates ( they make timing belts etc. ) does not list a timing belt for a 1997 Dodge Intrepid 3.3 liter V6 engine
2.7L has a chain3.2/3.5 has a timing belt.2.7L has a chain3.2/3.5 has a timing belt.
3.2L, in the front of the motor behind the front engine covers. 2.7L, no belt, is a timing chain.
