There is no specific noise to listen for. They will just break. That is why auto manufactures give a recommended mileage level to have it replaced. This will be far less expensive than waiting for it to break while you are driving the car. There is a great risk and almost a guarantee that the top side of your engine will be damaged quite a bit. This repair will easily be 10x greater than the amount to just have the belt replaced when recommended. Good Luck
Yes, there is no warning, and if it does break there is a very high chance you will need either a new engine or a new cylinder head, pistons, valves etc., which can be more expensive than a whole engine. Basically, if it breaks you are looking at a massive repair bill. It is one of the most serious failures a car can have.
If you hear any noise from the chain it needs replacing.
There is no timing belt. It is a timing chain. I have 130,000 miles and have not had any trouble. It will start making noise when it is time. Unlike timing belts which will break, timing chains wear out slowly.

That's an easy one! There is no timing belt. It is a timing chain. I have 130,000 miles and have not had any trouble. It will start making noise when it is time. Unlike timing belts which will break, timing chains wear out slowly.
www.nhtsa.gov Could be the timing tensioner about to break. Really sucks when that happens because there is absolutely no room to work on the timing while the motor is in the car. But, it can be done.
so you can listen to things
timing chain making a noise?
Engine tappets
When they get sloppy and worn they can.
A Saturn 3.0 timing belt noise can indicate that the belt is becoming worn down. It can also indicate a bad gear.
Sound, music, noise,
"Stop that noise! Listen to me!"
