Turn on the ignition switch but do not start the car. Be very quiet and you can hear the pump run for about 3 seconds until the system pressurizes. It's in the trunk.

I just read that there was a recall on the fuel lines and other parts sometime in 2004. Google "recalls on a 96 olds aurora" and it will list it.
check fuel pressure regulater maybe leaking past diaphram into vaccum line to intake manifold
