use newspaper or a fire log,start with kindling then add the bigger pieces when the fire gets going I use old cardboard egg cartons, you can place old candle wax into them and keep them for the next fire. You can also pour melted was over pine cones as these work well too.
Scrunch up a piece of news paper and place the egg carton on top. A few pieces of kindling wood leaning up against that and a couple of pieces of thicker wood on top of them (note: only put a large log on the fire once it is going well).
