FIRST; read all, you should read the manual first,if you dont have one,you can find it online,
just Google the MFG of the water tank. If it is a state, just put state water heater in google. Then you can search for your manual, and so on for any MFG.
on the top of the gas valve is a black knob, it should say- off,on,pilot.
the knob could have an arrow or a dot, point the arrow or dot to pilot and press down
on the knob,(you must have a match, long one or grill lighter ready to light pilot when you press down on the knob,as this will release gas for lighting ) hold the knob down for a minute after the pilot is light, this tells the thermocouple that there is flame present and to stay light.
Most times there is a copper line running from the gas valve to the inside of the tank,
at the end of this line is the pilot light, this is what you try to light.
If you release the knob and the light goes out try it again and hold the knob down longer.
After you release the knob and the pilot light stays lite, you now turn the knob to ON.
If the tub is not getting hot water the issue is probably with the hot water heater. The hot water heater may have tripped a breaker or the pilot light went out.
Have you turned the control from Pilot to On? Have you increased the temperature setting?
It is a water heater, not a hot water heater. There would be little point in using a hot water heater. I assume that is your point.
is the lines on the thermal coupler and pilot light for a hot water heater supposed to get hot

Same as any hot water heater. Turn the gas valve to off.
THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A HOT WATER HEATER.
THERMOCOUPLE or defective gas valve
It's called water heater. There isn't a reason to heat hot water
No, it is not dangerous. (Unless you are working with a water heater that is 20+ years old.) In any modern hot water heater, if the pilot light goes out a fail-safe will go off - preventing gas from leaking out. Also, there is a sensor so if there is not enough air-flow or oxygen with the water heater, it will shut off the gas.
It's because "hot-water" is a compound adjective, modifying "heater". It's not for heating water, it's for heating a house with hot water. There are many types of heaters that heat water, but only a hot-water heater is used for providing heated water for domestic use. A hydronic boiler also heats water, but it's only for use in radiators. The name "Hot Water Heater" is completely wrong for any use. There is no need to heat hot water. IT has always been "water heater". The term hot water heater has just been used for years because people don't realize the difference. It has always been WATER HEATER.The first answer is jibberish and makes no practical sense at all.
