In the 2001 Mountaineer open the tailgate, to the left open the panel where the jack would be located and towards the front of the opening you'll see the computer box on that sticker has a 5 digit number which is the code, you might have to pull the panel out a little bit to see but ITS THERE. YOUR WELCOME. In the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer, especially with the 3rd row seat, remove the trim panels at the rear of the back door and at the tailgate on the passenger side. Then pull the lower trim panel forward CAREFULLY. When shipped, the code is on one of the lift rods located in the trunk. Some owners write it in the owners manual. If it's not there, you must go to a dealer to get the code.
we have a 97 and the code is in the on right side in the back. But we went the dealers and they did it for us and it was about 20.00 the key is higher so we had one made at walmart but it will not open the doors but it will start it.
