How do you locate the problem when the air conditioner heater fan motor and rear window defroster fail together on a 1996 Oldsmobile 88 Royale?

to your problem.Had a similar problem, and well, still technically do, but it's in the process of being repaired now. On the center of the firewall in the engine compartment (engine rear), you will see a fan blower unit with a 3" long rubber hose and an electrical connector with 2 wires - 1 purple and 1 black. Check the wiring on this to see if there's any breaks in it. On mine the wiring was broken, and thus turned the connector into molten slag. A new connector runs at approx. $38.00 Canadian. Just splice the new wires on and reconnect. If this doesn't work, you will have to take of the fan blower motor, and likely replace, as I'm saving up to do. A new one runs at $84.00 Canadian. To do this, follow the steps below: 1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal. 2. Pull off the black engine crossbar with the 2 nuts on each side of the engine. 3. Unclip the wire harness. 4. Pull off the rubber tube. 5. Unbolt the 5 small nuts, and pull out the fan blower motor. 6. Step 5 may prove difficult, and you may need to loosen the 2 fuel line pipes to take off the motor so that you can twist it out of the firewall. 7. Installation is the same as the uninstallation.

Good luck. Hello. Not to say that my friend above may not be remotely right, but if your problem is that all of this climate control failed at the same time; the only common linkage between the rear defog and blower motor and heater/ air conditioning is the Electronic Climate Controls. It's in the middle of your dash. They run about $114.00 USD on gm parts for less websites, or you can get one at a salvage yard. It's a lot cheaper than just throwing parts at it like my friend above. To be sure get a COMPUTER SAFE test light and check the brown wire and the lower of the two orange wires. If both tested light up then your control unit is bad, if not then check your fuses. There are two which are necessary for proper functioning of the climate controls.

Hi I also am trying to fix my 1996 olds 88 with the same issue. Where and how large is the Electronic Climate Control unit?
