I did this yesturday... you have to loosen 2 bolts on the water pump. there is one inside the hole on the cover backing on the left side. The other bolt is just to the left of the timing cover backing. After that just put a pry bar and push down on the idler arm from the water pump. Im in the middle of doing a head gasket. Do you know how to properly time the 2 timing pulleys once the belt is off? Does the top pulley only go back on in one position? Thanks and hope I provided some insight too! AJ ajkirby_69@hotmail.com
yes
if im not mistaken..it is behind the timing cover..it runs off the timing belt You are correct. It is the belt tensioner for your timing belt and a pain to release to release the tension and also not the easiest to replace.
My friend, it is important that you get a shop manual for this job, if you are the one to do it. It doesn't take a rocket-scientist but one has to know much about how an engine works and safety. Now, if your'e asking bcuz you are going to do it and kow quite some on the subject, You really need to consult with a shop manual. Your question indicates to me that you have never done this work. So be very careful and good luck. There is no 1991 sunfire, it was the sunbird until 1996. Actually, the Sunbird only went thru '94. The Sunfire showed up for '95. (I know, I own one! :) Well correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the Cavalier/Sunbird/Sunfire had a timing belt I thought they had timing chains. If I remember correctly thru 94 cavalier 4cl has the timing chain and sunbird has a timing belt. 95 and up cavalier/sunfire has a timing chain.
loosen the three bolts on the distributor and turn it, that will change your timing. Timing belt change intervel is 100,000km or 5years.
go to autozone.com current vehicle choose car repair info vehicle repair guides it may be in there.

The water pump should be driven by the timing belt, yes. If you change the water pump, you might wanna change the timing belt and tensioner while you're in there.
what is the color order of the wires to a Pontiac Sunbird ignition module

I'm not sure if you can on that model. If it has a distributor, you can loosen the hold down bolt and turn it to advance or retard your timing. If it doesn't have a distributor, it set by the ecm.
