The speedometer on the 1985 Mercedes 230E is operated by cable. The 230E was in production from 1979 to 1985.
In my personal experience the speedometer stopped working because the mechanical drive cable broke.
I had same problem on mine , the exhaust milted the rubber right into the cable on drivers side. you need a new one
Unhook it from the tranny and then the other end is up under the dash hooked to the speedometer, unhook it and take the cable out, just reverse the process for installation.
Call the dealer, and ask for the different kinds of speedometer gears, you'll be lucky if you can still get one. They Usually go by color and teeth count. If I remember right, they are the typical cause.
There is two wires on the rear drive shaft and they are probably broken. Have them soldered and it will work fine.
On a 1985 extended cab with 22R engine which I presume would be similar you remove the plastic top and bottom around the steering column, about 7 screws. Remove the instrument hood, 5 screws(1 each corner, 1 at end of dash by door). Remove 4 screws holding in instrument cluster. Release retaining clip that hold cable to back of speedometer, hard to get at unless you release cable from bracket on firewall. Depress clip on end closest to cable or gently lift bracket with small screwdriver or pick on end closest to speedometer. It is a nylon retainer that fits into a grove on the speedometer. Unsrcew the cable from the sending unit on the transmission, this is the large nut or knurles on the cable end. Hope this helps.
It is part of the speedometer.
Cable Video Store was created in 1985.
Cencom Cable Television was created in 1985.
The 1985 Chevrolet Corvette accelerator cable is held in place with a swivel nut on each end of the cable. Turn the swivel nuts to the left to remove the cable. Reverse the process to install the new accelerator cable.
