Using copy and paste from a Word document makes adding special characters to hotmail and gmail easy. Though it's not necessary, it might not be a bad idea to type the whole email from Word and copy it at the same time. I've found this especially helpful when typing very long emails, as one slip of the mouse can eliminate your train of thought in a fraction of a second, not to mention power outages, viruses, etc.

For superscript, such as used when indicating "to the power of," or degrees in Fahrenheit or Celsius, for instance, 24o F, you would use the following keystroke in Word: 2 + 4 + control + shift + = + o.

To bring Word out of superscript, simply repeat the command: "control + shift." You will then notice the cursor return to normal size.

For subscript, such as used when indicating number of atoms in a compound, such as H2O, you would use the following keystroke in Word: H + control + = + 2 + control + = + O.

Notice that the second "control + =" is needed to bring Word out of subscript mode before the "O" is typed.

Copy and paste also works well for adding diacritics, those marks or accents (glyphs) that change the nature of the letter to which they are applied. There are various key commands (shortcuts) for adding accents and special characters in Word. Some include á (alt + 160), ó (alt + 162), ú (alt + 163), or ÿ (alt + 152).

If you don't know the shortcut to add an accent, you can always open the character map in Windows to find it. To do this, go to start, run, then type "charmap" in the open window and click "OK." Character map can also be found by going to start, all programs, accessories, and then system tools. This is the same for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7.

You can use the character map to create all sorts of diacritics and punctuation in numerous languages. Some examples would be Í, é, ó, ñ, ŷ, ö, ǽ, ¿, and £.

For Microsoft Word users:

Use Ctrl + D. Then click the circle in front of superscript. Click on Okay.

Everything from then on out will be in superscript. When you want to change back to regular sized font, follow the same steps and it will deselect superscript and take you back to regular font.

Since there is no direct option in Yahoo! Mail composing area to get superscripts, Simply type the same in Microsoft Office Word; copy and paste in your Yahoo! Mail composing area. Done!
