There is a hood release to the left of your leg when you are sat in the drivers seat. Once you have pulled that, go around to the front of the car and put two fingers....face down....into the space between the hood and the grill. You should feel a little give...apply more pressure and pull up with your free hand.
I've noticed with some later model 2002's there has been a color indicator (either yellow or red) and you have to feel for that (The lever not color) and then push it left and pull up with the free hand. You should be able to look once you've 'popped' the hood whether or not there is a color there indicating the release for the rest of the hood.

how to open the hood of a 2002 Tahoe
The hood struts (aka lift supports) are shot. There is no tension adjustment. Your local auto parts store will sell you new struts for that vehicle for aprox $25 each. Just replace them and the hood will stay open for you.
On the Ford Explorer you pull the hood release inside the vehicle which causes the hood to pop up slightly. Then you reach in through the grill at the front of the Explorer, near the top of the grill just under the hood and slightly left of the center of the grill. Move the secondary catch lever to the right and lift the hood. If the hood won't open, a second person inside pulling on the hood release while the other person operates the secondary catch lever may be necessary if the latch needs to be lubricated.

I have the same problem and what they did was where your hood release is take the actual cable end out of the lever. In order to get the hood open, someone will have to take some pliars and pull as hard as they can. I have had from several Ford Explorer owners for the same make around year of 1998-2001 that they have had to have their hood release cable replaced due to it being stripped or extra slack in it for some reason. I haven't gotten it replaced yet but I have been told that I have to order this part through the Ford dealership for about $20.00.
