Your local library should have some books that show you how to do that. There are some which show you how to potty train in one day, and the amazing part is, they work... provided that you do it right.

This is a dumb question. it's like asking 'why do we need to breathe'. Are you asking why we generally use a small "potty" to train children, the answer is because a regular toilet is too high for young children & they would be afraid of falling. A potty gets a child used to the process of using a toilet instead of going in their diaper. As they get older (and taller), they can switch from the potty to a regular toilet.
