How do you prim the oil pump on a 1990 2.9 v6 ford ranger?

if pump is still in engine,take off distridutor and shaft assembly, put long flat head screwdriver shaft attached to drill.spin shaft that's connected to oil pump and it will suck up oil and distribute thro-out engine.(take off 1 valve cover to see that oil actually comes up before quiting.
Now,if the pump is new and out of engine,fill the gear box FULL of vasoline,reinstall pump,when engine cranks it wil self prime ,the vasoline will not hurt anything.
