While the engine is still on the assembly stand, turn it so that the oil filter would be vertical, then pour a small amount of oil into the holes while turning the engine slowly BACKWARD. This should cause the oil pump to pull oil through the lines and prime the pump.

If the engine is already in the car, take an old distributor and remove the lower gear by tapping out the pin from the shaft. Place the distributor back into the engine and bolt down. Make sure to align the shaft key into the oil pump. Place a high speed drill onto the top shaft of the distributor and tighten down. Run the distributor with the drill for about 20 minutes. Take off the valve covers and watch the push rods. Eventually, the oil will start pouring out and down into and over the camshaft. If this is a new rebuild, I would recommend removing the spark plugs and squirting some oil into your pistons cylinders. Some websites will sale a version of this type of distributor for those who do not want to make their own.
