If you can get a rebuild kit for the alternator and have the necessary pullers and can solder in the diodes rebuilding is simply removal and replacement of the parts. I recommend you simply exchange the alternator for a rebuilt unit at your FLAPs (friendly local auto parts store) it is easier and cheaper in the long run.
Also there is a website that has a slew of alternator and starter instructions. They are called star-alt
I'm rebuilding my alternator tomorrow, I got a rebuild kit w/instructions for $16 from autozone, which is a lot cheaper then the $60-$100 dollars for an already rebuild one
If your alternator is defective the best thing to do is to purchase a rebuilt alternator and trade yours in on it. Much simpler and easier than trying to rebuild it yourself.
yes, you have to rebuild it, it is usually easier and much cheaper to just buy a new alternator.
get a chiltons repair manual at the library for 69.
Unless you have the means to rebuild it yourself, you'll probably just have to replace it.
Usually an alternator only needs bearings, brushes and possibly diodes and regulator. Most people rebuilding an alternator replace all of them. If you haven't rebuilt one or helped someone rebuild one it can be a little trickey. Some require that you solder the diode plate, others need very precise assembly. Often a rebuild kit costs more than a rebuilt alternator.
It was my alternator, needed rebuild.
It is best to leave this up to proffesionals who specialize in remanufacturing alternators. Contact your local autoparts store, they will be able to help you out, & they probably have a remanufatured alternator in stock at a competitive price.
