If it is out of refrigerant but lost it slowly enough that you think it will hold more, the easiest is to buy a conversion kit at an auto store to change from the older refrigerat to the newer weight. The kits have instructions. It's a matter of empting the old (which requires a dealer's equipment to do it legally and not damage the ozone). Then putting on new caps. Then refilling it with the oil and new refrigerant in the order described. If's not holding the refrigerant it won't work. If you want to stay with the old weight then only a mechanic can get the use the stuff. I converted an '89 probe with many miles on it several years old and it must have held and worked well for upwards of 3 or more years.

The 1997 Ford F1 50 pickup truck low pressure recharge port is located on the air conditioner compressor. The low pressure recharge port will be labeled as such.
There are two ports to recharge the air conditioner in a 1998 VW Jetta. Follow the Air Conditioner lines to the firewall, the lower one is on the passenger side near the strut tower.
You will need a Freon recharge kit. Connect the hoses of the recharge kit to the ports on top of the air conditioner compressor. Release the Freon into the compressor.
