Having suffered acne, I mean no humor by this, but hot water and soap are the only "common household items" that will help that I know of.
As long as you thoroughly rinse the soap off, no harm should come to your skin, unless you have an unusual sensitivity to some soaps.
Other than that - and you can do this several times a day, it can't hurt - cut back (if you haven't yet) on greasy and sugary foods, only drink water or non-sweetened juices, stuff like that.
