There are several things you can do. Probably the most important thing is to use common sense- don't click on links titled "13.42.46", or anything that looks like that. Be careful about where you enter your email address: Believe me, you will not win $10,000 just from being the 1,000,000th person to visit the site. One other thing you can do is get an email scanner- AVG is just one of the many anti-virus programs there are.

Get yourself a good virus scanner... there are plenty of free ones out there. For example, I particularly like Avast. Rule of thumb... if you don't know who sent it to you, DON'T OPEN IT! Free virus scanners can let their own ones in though so don't be too trusting. Norton or Symantec is good. Rule of thumb can fail if person sending email doesn't know there own computer is infected with a download virus, even if you know them. So best way to avoid getting viruses- Don't get email. Good addition. Thankyou

You should follow the following steps. You should only read the email if you answer yes to all these questions.

1) Is the email of someone you know?

2) Have you received an email from this sender before?

3) Were you expecting an email with an attachment from this sender?

4) Does the email from the sender with the contents as described in the subject line and the name of the attachment make sense?

5) Does the email contain a virus? You determine this if you have an anti-virus programme on your computer

Unsafe attachments include:

· EXE - is the common extension for executable files

· .INF - is a plain text file used by Microsoft Windows for installation of software and drives.

· .INK - contains colour information related to a specific image file.

· REG - represents text files that can be imported to change settings in this storage.

· SCR - windows screensaver. It will auto launch as the computer is inactive for several minutes. SCR files is most likely to display vector, text animations and slide shows

· VBS - short for Visual Basic Scripting Edition. It can access into the file when it is currently on use.

Safe attachments include:

· GIF - short for Graphics Interchange Format.

· JPEG - is a common image format, it is named after Joint Photographic Experts Group. This type of file format is very useful for the use of images in web applications.

· WAV - short for Waveform audio format, also known as Audio for Windows. It is a file format useful for storing audio files in your PC.

You should also Purchase an anti-virus software

Hope this helps :)
