drill through the release pin
you need to push in the hole with 1/8 inch screw driver under the steering column, below your ignition switch. there is a release button in there and it just pulls out once you have that release button pushed it's actually quite easy..

Turn ignition key to the 1st position, and then push and hold the trip meter reset stem, then, while continuing to hold the trip meter pushed in, and after no more than 2 seconds, turn the ignition key to the 2nd position and continue to hold the trip meter reset pushed in until the service light begins flashing. Once it begins flashing, you can release the trip meter. You may also get an audible signal when complete.

The ignition coil is the transformer that puts out the voltage required to make a spark jump the points of a spark plug. this in turn lights the petrol which pushed down the piston.
This is something that is almost impossible. If this is happening on your Ford Escort you have some serious wiring problems.
