You just disconect the wires and then take out the bolts holding it in. Remember to always disconnect the battery.
The starter on a 1998 Toyota 4runner is held located on the transmission housing. The starter is held on by 2 bolts which mount it directly it the engine. Remove the two bolts to replace the starter.

If it is a 6-cylinder engine the starter is at the "front" of the engine about 10 inches behind the bottom of the radiator. You have to jack up the front of the car and remove it from underneath.
Starter of toyota corolla and matrix is not the same. The best thing you do if you change your starter by yourself is to remove and compare to the new starter.
disconnect neg.cable,then disconnect pos. cable from starter ,then other wire,then remove 2 bolts holding starter to engine.
You should remove the positive cable from your 1996 Toyota battery. Remove the cables from the front of the starter. Remove the starter retaining bolts. Reverse the process to install the new starter.

Remove a battery connector. Remove the starter and put another in it's place.
For the 2.2L engine, remove the starter. The sensor is screwed into the engine block behind the starter with a 10mm bolt. The wiring plugs into the front of the sensor facing the radiator.
