Cap and rotor, yes. Points, no.
Remove wires from old distributor and put on new one [one at a time, noting locations on distributor, or marking wires and locations]. Remove rotor [noting direction it is pointing] and replace with new one pointing in same direction].
To gain some elbow room I would remove the distributor. That's how I do that one.
Remove the distributor and set it up in a press or vise of some sort. Press out the roll pin that retains the gear and install new gear. This would be the time to use shims above the gear to minimize end play.
Very Carefully
You must set the cam retard to plus or minus 2 degrees, or you have other problems.
That is the only electrical device that is in the distributor. Remove the distributor cap and rotor and you will see it.
How does one remove and replace the starter in the 1997 Bravada??
SORRY, But it don't have a timing belt. It has timing chain and gears.
It is in the distributor housing. You will have remove the distributor cap held on by 3 phillips screws. You can take off the distributor wires but it probably is not necessary. If you do be sure to mark where they go before you reconnect them. You can remove the air filter cap to give you a little more room to work. Next you will have to remove the side screw that holds the distributor coil in. Disconnect all the wires to the coil then pull it out. The TDC sensor should be inside the distributor housing and will have some wires leading to a harness attached to it.

If you remove the distributor cap and rotor then you will see the cam sensor bolted on the distributor and it will have an electrical connector pluged into it.
