Unfortunately, the only way to change the antenna is from underneath the rear end on the drivers side of the car. You have to remove the muffler to get to the antenna. I have a 1990 and mine quit going down, instead of changing it I disconnected the power wire and it just stays up all the time, but works fine.
I have an'89 c4 ihave recently removed my aerial and didnt need to remove the muffler, however i did find if you remove the sidelight it give you a better view of what you are doing.

remove wheel and remove the plastic liner inside the fender. remove the radio and disconnect the antenna wire. Tape another, 10' long wire to the end of the antenna wire. Unscrew the nut around the antenna from on top. pull the antenna and antenna wire out through the fender. Tape the 10' long wire to the new antenna wire and pull it back through the dash to the radio.
