Lift the back of the vehicle.Use jack stands.First you will need to remove 4 bolts (14mm) off of the rear end.Second you will need to remove 2 bolts from the center bearing (also 14mm from top)Pull forward to release from differential then pull back to remove from transmission (be sure to use small pan to catch any fluid that may come out.(Awesome you got it out now the fun begins)You will need to remove inner clips (flat head screw driver will do)I used two sockets one bigger and one smaller than the universal cups and of course a hammer (try not to hit bar lobes can easily be damaged. after they are out you'll want to clean the inner lobes of both sides (i used sand paper) then used a little grease to make the installation of caps easier (very important not to lose any needle bearings i filled caps with grease so needles wont fall out of place don't worry excess grease grease can always be wiped off) Place the universal joint in the lobes and then gently place caps on both sides. Use a 6 inch C clamp to push caps on both sides back in you may need to tap a little with hammer then install clips using pliers. finally install shaft back into trans tighten center bearing and then install the last 4 bolts to rear end. carefully bring back down and drive. total time 3hrs here some extra info.
1) install grease fitting first before installing u-joint be sure to place fitting in angle
this will make it easier to use grease gun
2) lube all u-joints before installation of shaft. this will be easier than doing it under vehicle
also dealer wanted $800.00 yes!! $800.00 for whole drive shaft. I got my u-joint from D.S.I. Texas for $25.50+ship ph#1-866-455-6622
they also sell whole driveshaft $365.00
Well, if it is a front driveshaft, the issue is a CV joint and you'll have to remove the driveshaft and take it in to be rebuilt. Taht will run you $150 or more. If it is a rear driveshaft, it will be cheaper if you remove the driveshaft and take it to a driveline shop where they can press in a new u-joint.....I'd recommend you replace both. A guess? $60 to $80
maybe you can unbolt the universal joint and then slide it out of the spline
Unbolt/remove driveshaft. Use U-joint press to remove old U-joint, install new and replace driveshaft.
Remove the bolts that hold the drive shaft on to the universal joint on each end.
Mark drive shaft and yoke to be sure to install in the same position to maintain factory balance Remove and discard 2 small "u" bolts at rear end Pry driveshaft out of yoke Slide driveshaft off splines at transmission tail piece Bring driveshaft to an auto parts/machine shop to have new "U" joint pressed into driveshaft Replace "U" Bolts with new ones
The driveshaft is removed to replace the clutch by unbolting the u-joints and retaining caps on each end of the drive shaft. The shaft can then be collapsed slightly to allow for easier removal.
Mark driveshaft, transmission splines, and differential yoke. So that installation will maintain factory balance remove and discard small "u" bolts from differential yoke pry driveshaft out of differential yoke pull drivshaft out of transmission spline shaft bring driveshaft to machine shop to have old universal joints pressed out of shaft and new ones installed or use vise and sockets to drive "U" joints out of driveshaft re-install driveshaft in same position as removed using new "U" bolts
take out the four bolts where the drive shaft meets the rear end, then move the driveshaft foreward about one inch, drop the driveshaft down and pull it out.
if the play is in driveshaft, replace u joints. if the play is actually in the diff, remove driveshaft and tighten pinion bearing.
remove the nuts from the u bolts and remove the bolts. Install new ones and tighten the bolts.
Jack up and support the right front of the vehicle. Remove the wheel/tire. Remove the brake caliper and hang the caliper with a piece of wire out of the way. Remove hub/rotor assembly. Remove backing plate and spindle. Slide out axle assembly. Replace u-joint as you would on a driveshaft. Assemble in reverse order.
Remove wheels Remove brake lines Remove driveshaft Support rear end at axles Loosen and remove springs "U" Bolts
