How do you remove ignition switch on 93 ford explorer sport without a key?

replacing a igition switch, no keyI just ran into the same problem and was told to drill out the igition cylinder . I did starting with a 1/4 drill right down the center of tne cylinder and drilled about 1.5 inch's down, then I went bigger until I was using about a 1/2 drill. I then took a chisel and split the cylinder and was able to pick it out without doing damage to the igition collar. Dis-connect the battery so as not do any damage to the vehicle. Once the cylinder comes out, then you can turn the lock and it should slide out, then you pull out the plastic retainer holding the brass cog that turns the shaft going down the the igition start box or you can leave it in place as I did and start the vehicle with a screw driver to move it. YOU must be careful doing any of this so as not to damage the collar, if it is damaged you are in trouble. Also if you have a tilt wheel, be extra careful. I was told this is the only way to fix this problem, but U was told if you remove the dooor lock cylinder and take it to a locksmith, they can cut a key for you but when I called one he said no, he would not do it, why? he would not say, he wanted to come to the house and do it here but it was too costly as far as I was concerned, a new switch cost less then 15.00 at the parts store. To remove the ignition in this vehicle with no key you can't take the door lock to a locksmith. The key the locksmith makes will only fit the door. The key system for this vehicle is known as a "Ford 10 Cut". The cuts at the tip of the key operate the ignition and the 6 cuts towards the bow of the key operate the door. This is 2 keys in one. What this guy failed to mention is that it most likely too him hours to accomplish this and he was lucky he did no damage. If you have no key call a locksmith to have a key made for the ignition. The only other way to remove this ignition with no key is to drill the sidebar. This is VERY difficult to do it you don't know where it is. The ignition must be turned to the start position in order to remove it due to the shape of the finger at the end of the ignition.
