Move the lever down that adjusts the rake of your steering wheel (a lever on the l/h side of the steering column allows you to do this). Then you insert either 2 flat bladed knives under the clear speedo casing (there are 2 little indents where the knives need to be inserted). Gently lever back the speedo pod towards you and you should find it will release to 2 further plastic pegs at the top of the speedo pod. The pod shoud just pop out and then just disconnect the wiring plug and there you have it!

1. Remove the plastic cowling by liftin on the front edge nearest the windshield. 2. Unplug all the switched and plugs from the back of the instrument cluster. 3. Remove the four screws securing the instruments to the dashboard. 4. Lift up the instrument cluster and unplug he speedometer cable and flat white pin connector on the passenger side of the cluster. 5. Lift the instrument cluster off. To install, simply reverse the directions.
Remove 5 screws under steering column Crack open and remove steering column covers. Lower Steering wheel Remove two screws on top of instrument shroud Pop out bottom of shroud which has retaining clips Remove two connectors on left side of shroud by squeezing locking tabs Unscrew air sensor on right side of shroud Remove shroud Remove three mounting screws and pull out instrument cluster Remove three connectors on back of cluster by squeezing locking tabs
You have to remove the instrument cluster to get to the bulb. start by removing the left speaker grill, lower left trim panel (5 screws), remove the steering column trim cover (6 screws), remove the cluster and trim bezels (9 screws), Remove the cluster by pulling it out ( 4 screws).
Instrument Panel Lamp Procedure per Prizm Shop Manual This procedure only applies to cars with tilt steering wheels. Prizms without tilt wheels are infinitely more difficult because you have to disable the airbag system and remove the trim covers from the steering wheel. Important: The ignition switch must be in the OFF position when removing the instrument cluster assembly. 1. Tilt the steering column down in order to gain the necessary clearance to remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate. 2. Remove the two screws that secure the instrument panel cluster trim plate. 3. Disengage the two lower clips (hidden) 4. Gently remove the instrument panel cluster trim plate from the instrument panel assembly. 5. Remove the three screws which secure the instrument panel assembly, pull out the assembly carefully. 6. Mark the the 4 electrical connectors where they connect to the cluster assembly so that you remember which connector went to which socket 7. Disconnect the 4 electrical connectors from the cluster assembly 8. Remove the instrument cluster assembly 9. Remove the instrument cluster retainer with the instrument cluster lens attached from the instrument cluster case by releasing the 8 locking tabs. 10. Remove the cluster bulb socket from the instrument cluster case by turning in a counterclockwise direction. Remove the old bulb from the socket and replace the bulb. 11. Reverse the procedure to reassemble NOTE: This is such a convoluted procedure you should replace all bulbs while you are this deep into it. Trust me, the other bulbs will soon go bad. Incredibly, the shop manual does not list the part number of the bulb. Note 2: It is easier, and you are less likely to break the trim plate, if this is done while the dash is warm and therfore more flexible. Like parked in the sun for a while before starting. Also, the bulb is a #194, and you will want to get green colored "instrument bulb boots".
Pop out the bezel around the radio and note the 5/16 bolts (4 of 'em ) holding the main cluster bezel down. Remove the Fuse Access door on the driver side with the door open and remove the 5/16 screw just inside the access area. Remove them and GENTLY pull up on the assembly until it begins to pop out. The entire assembly should lift out from around the instrument cluster. Remove the 4 screws on the cluster (same size as the others) and lift the cluster. Lay the cluster down upside down and CAREFULLY unplug the cluster. One Blue, One Black connector. VIOLA! it's out. Replace in the reverse order.

Connect the battery cable, and check the operation of all gauges, lights and signals. *** Turn the light bulb housing counter clock wise. Sometimes they are very hard to turn. It's fortunately not too hard. 1) Adjust the steering wheel all the way out and down 2) Lift vertically the U-shaped molding covering the accordion molding behind the steering wheel 3) Unscrew the two screws holding in the instrument cluster. 4) Pull the instrument cluster straight toward you 5) Carefully disconnect the harnesses in the back of the instrument cluster 6) Remove instrument cluster 7) Swap out the bulb (its not a standard T5 wedge bulb, you have to get them from the dealer) 8) Re-assemble

Remove the green rubber boot from the old bulb place on new bulb, insert in socket and replace the bulb. 11.
